Individual and Collaborative Works
at Murray State University, 2012
This is the sixth whole-gallery collaboration/ installation by Brandon C. Smith and Travis Townsend. Different from past projects, this show was built, for the most part, around individual works that were then jointly altered or arranged on site to interweave narratives and create new visual connections.
Smith took the lead in establishing the arrangement of the images, and then both artists arranged the sculptures and added wall drawings. Individually, Smith created the oil paintings and the bird sculptures, while Townsend created the sculptures and drawings on plywood. Five works were collaboratively completed on site.
Similarities in symbolic characters, material use, and color use have emerged during the creation and installation of this exhibition. SmithTownsendCollaborative: Individual and Collaborative Works visually, narratively, and conceptually connects individual artistic vocabularies while creating something distinct.
